Socialism
The means of production should be owned collectively rather than privately, so that economic decisions serve need rather than profit.
What does this mean?
Socialism in the general sense is the family of positions holding that productive assets — factories, land, capital — should be owned in common rather than by private individuals. Its central claim is that when a small number of people own the means by which everyone else must live, the resulting inequality is not a market accident but a structural feature, and no amount of redistribution will remove it.
The tradition contains very different answers to how this should be organised: state ownership, cooperatives, municipal enterprise, worker councils, or market socialism in which firms are worker-owned but still compete. It also contains a long argument about means, dividing those who see parliamentary politics as sufficient from those who do not. India’s Constitution was amended in 1976 to describe the republic as socialist, a term generally understood there to mean a mixed economy oriented to social justice rather than comprehensive public ownership.
Where did it come from?
Began with the utopian socialists of the early nineteenth century, was given its systematic form by Marx and Engels, and split repeatedly thereafter over both means and ends. Socialist parties governed much of Europe in the twentieth century, while socialist ideas shaped Indian planning from the Second Five Year Plan onward.

What it looks like today

- Left Front governments in Kerala and West Bengal
- Worker-owned enterprises such as the Mondragón cooperatives in Spain
Where it sits on each dimension
Wealth and inequality
At the redistributive pole. Inequality is treated as generated by ownership, and therefore not solvable through taxation alone.
The state in the economy

Religion and the state
Power and its limits
Varies enormously within the tradition — from council democracy to one-party rule. The mid-range score reflects that spread, not a settled position.

Its strongest arguments
- It identifies a real asymmetry: those who own productive assets make decisions that shape the lives of those who do not.
- Socialist movements drove many now-uncontroversial reforms, including the eight-hour day, workplace safety law and universal schooling.
- Cooperative forms have demonstrated that enterprises can be run successfully without external shareholders.
Its strongest criticisms
- Without market prices, planners lack the information needed to allocate resources — the central objection made by Mises and Hayek.
- Concentrating economic and political power in the same hands has repeatedly produced authoritarian outcomes.
- Collective ownership weakens the link between effort and reward that market economies use to motivate work and innovation.
Common misconceptions
- That socialism means whatever the Soviet Union did. Many socialists were among that system’s earliest and most consistent critics.
- That it means everyone earns the same. Most socialist proposals allow differences in pay while changing who owns productive assets.
- That it is only about the state. Cooperatives, mutuals and worker ownership are socialist forms that do not expand government at all.
A caveat
This is a broad umbrella. If your answers put you here, the more specific entries — social democracy, democratic socialism, anarcho-socialism — will describe your position better.
